MIGRAIN: Reading A Image

Reading an Image Analysis
Image result for 50 cent reebok
The denotation of this poster, is that 50 cent is a person who has lived through many trials and has let it define and shape him. From this poster i can connote that, 50 cent has been in some sort of criminal activity which caused him to reform, as well as this the quote seems to be about him and his close encounter with death. Furthermore, the use of 'i am what i am' pasted over most of the poster in a medieval serif typography all in lower case suggests to the audience that he does not associate himself with the norms and likes to go against the rules and shape his own identity. The use of a dark colour scheme highlights the grittiness of this ad campaign, having such harsh colours helps to convey the idea of not following society and being who you want to be which is what Reebok are trying to portray. Having 50 cent staring directly at audience, makes him seem like a dominant figure. This is further highlighted by the lack of emotion on his face. Framing both pictures equally on the poster portrays the idea that what 50 cent has done previously will always be part of him some way some how. Placing the 'I am' in 'i am what i am' on the side of 50 cent and the 'what i am' where the fingerprints are is significant as it signifies that all these aspects put together make 50 cent who he is and he is not ashamed of it and will proclaim it boldly. Furthermore, the use of fingerprints in the picture create the symbolism of not only crime but also identity as that is what people denote them with, it also allows the audience to connote the idea that rebook shoes allows you to create your own identity. All of this allows rebook to interact with it 16-25 male target audience probably living in an urban area with the same ideals that he poster is conveying
Image result for puma advert usain bolt

From this poster we can denote that Usain Bolt is getting ready to start a race.
From his stance and by blurring the background and focusing on Bolt, the audience of this poster can connote that he is focused on not only completing but winning the race, puma has placed there brand on most of Bolt making him brand associated so when audiences see him they will connect him with Puma. The use of strong bold colours, portrays Bolt as a independent strong character, traits that Puma associate themselves with. This has been done to convey this towards the audience. The confident look on Bolts face and him staring directly at the camera makes the audience feel as if he is going to face it all. This is using race iconography which heavily connected to Bolt. The framing of the poster is effective as Bolt is dominant for most of the poster. But Doubt is next to him almost like it is his opponent in the race. The use of this technique is effective as it makes Bolt seem more realistic as he faces the same problems as everyone else. Puma have purposely crossed out the word doubt in bright red and placed there logo underneath it to connote to the audience that using there product will allow them to cross out all there doubts. These techniques have been used to appeal to there target audience who are pprobably in the 20-35 demographic and have an interest in sports specifically running.

  1. Some really good start at analysis - well done! You have used some media terms accurately and you have considered the appeal to the audience. Could you think about the TARGET audience and their demographic and psychographic? You have thought about associations and colour scheme effects. You could have thought about the symbolism of the fingerprints on the first poster and how they create synergy. How does this suggest that the brand identifies itself? Some strong ideas about framing and font choice which pushes your analysis. Well done.
Can you add the preferred / negotiated and oppositional readings to this analysis?
